When the TV drama Mozart in The Jungle was created in 1996, it was hailed as the first TV movie to depict gender equality.
But that was before the film was nominated for a Golden Globe award in 2002 for best animated feature.
A gender analysis of the film itself, titled Gender, is being written by Professor Susanne Rehn, professor of sociology and media studies at New York University.
She says that the show’s gender politics, which revolved around a woman’s relationship with her mother, did not reflect the realities of everyday life in India.
“The first season of Mozart had two women as characters, and this was the first time we were shown this dynamic between a woman and a man,” she told Al Jazeera.
“We were only able to see the side of a woman as an emotional and romantic relationship, but not from a woman perspective.”
Rehn says that while the gender analysis was being written in the context of the gender dynamics of the show, it also reflected the reality of the lives of many women in India, especially in the rural areas of the country.
“There is a huge disparity between the status of women and men in the country, and we don’t really see it reflected in the show,” she said.
“This shows the huge disparity in the ways that we see gender in India.”

However, Rehn says the gender studies aspect was also “not done very well” by the film’s producers.
The gender analysis, titled “Gender and gender politics in The Legend Of The Black Panther: A Study of gender, gender politics and cinema in the movie”, is being published in a book entitled Gender, Gender Politics, Gender and Cinema.
Rehn’s book, which is being released in September, explores how gender politics are shaped by the medium and society in India today.
“As a gender studies scholar, gender issues are always a concern to me.
But gender studies has been neglected, and often underrepresented, in India,” she says.
Rehm points to the film The Legend, which was made by a different studio and features a male lead in an equal role, but was criticised for its portrayal of women.
“It has always been about gender, not gender politics,” she explained.
“In the end, we will have to analyse the film to understand why it got nominated for awards.
It is about a woman becoming a film star, and how that is reflected in gender politics.”
Gender politics and gender issuesThe gender analyses article comes as a new book titled Gender and Gender Politics is released by the gender Studies Institute at NYU.
The book examines gender politics as it relates to media and society.
“When we talk about the gender issues of the media today, we need to understand how the media is being produced, marketed and marketed,” the book’s author and Gender Studies Professor Susan Rehn told Al Jazeeras programme.
Rehns book is an attempt to “understand the cultural and political forces that shape gender and gender studies as it applies to media”.
Rehn said she has been working on the book since 2014, and was surprised to learn that she had not heard of the Gender Studies Institute until the publication of her book.
“I thought, ‘This is amazing, but why haven’t we heard about this before?'”
Rehns told AljazeerAS.
“I was surprised that there were no articles in print about gender studies in India before I came here.”
Gender issues and gender rightsRehn, who has published books on media, women, and feminism, says she hopes that her book will spark conversations about gender issues and the media that shape it.
“Gender issues are important, but we dont talk about them enough, and I want to bring attention to the fact that gender is not just about women.
Gender is also about all people, and the gender issue is not about only women.
I want people to think about gender and why we are having these discussions,” she added.
The Gender Studies Department at NYU will be holding a public lecture on gender issues in the next few weeks.
The first lecture will take place in New York on February 13.
