Next Big Futures, a new game studio with a unique and ambitious vision, is launching a new studio apartment to take advantage of the unique location of Hawaii, the world’s largest island.
Next Big studios will be based on the islands of Kauai and Maui, which were developed as the U.S. mainland in the early 1900s and are now the primary land mass for the state of Hawaii.
The studio’s first apartment will be built on the grounds of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and will have a studio suite and studio bathroom, a walk-in closet, and a fully-equipped kitchen with a fridge and microwave.
The studio will also have a shared storage room for studio equipment and an onsite laundry facility, among other amenities.
NextBig will also offer studio residents a studio space on the island of Oʻahu, and will also open a second studio apartment on Oʼahu, the site of the world-famous Oʚōhi Palace and the home of O’ahuʻūs most famous tourist attraction, the Mānauʻa Beach Resort and Spa.
“We’re committed to building on the unique nature of our home state of Hawai’i, and building affordable studio apartments is a natural fit for our team,” said Chris Cramer, NextBig co-founder and chief creative officer.
“It’s our mission to provide affordable studios and a place for all of our residents to explore the creative process.”
The studio is planning to open its new studio in early 2019.
Nextbig currently has studios in New York City, Los Angeles, Austin, London, Paris, Seattle, Singapore, Shanghai, and Vancouver.
It has already opened a studio on the West Coast of the United States, in San Francisco, and has a handful of studios in Europe and Japan.
The company plans to expand its studio base throughout the world, with the goal of opening studios in more than 150 countries by 2026.
The team is currently working with several local governments to establish a model for international studio development, including the Netherlands, Austria, and Switzerland.
The development team has worked closely with a variety of stakeholders, including real estate developers, developers, artists, and investors.
“The collaborative nature of the team and the innovative approach to building and managing studio facilities has given us the flexibility to be responsive to the changing needs of our community and the needs of the studio’s residents,” said Cramer.
“When the studio is built, we hope to provide residents with a studio that is as affordable as the surrounding surrounding community,” said co-Founder and CEO Nick Wiegand.
“We look forward to welcoming new studios to the NextBig family, and to seeing them in Hawaiʼi.”
The development of NextBig studio apartments has already started.
In addition to the two studios on O’ōhi, the company is working with three other studios to build an apartment in a new complex on Kauai.
NextBig will be looking to partner with studios in other locations in Hawaii, including Kailua-Kona, Lanai, and Kauai City.
Next big will also be looking for studios in the Pacific Northwest.
The developer plans to open new studio apartments on a variety, but not limited to, sites throughout the state, including in Maui.
“As we look to build a global footprint, we’re thrilled to be working with our partners in Hawaii to deliver a unique, high-quality studio apartment solution,” said Wiegad.
“With our international partners and an active and growing community, Next Big is confident that we can help our residents in our native state of Maui and Hawaii, who are currently struggling with housing shortages, access studio facilities that will be of great value to them.”
