If you’ve ever wanted to become a professional illustrator, designer, artist, or filmmaker, you may need to reconsider.
The term “artist” has been around since the late 19th century, but it’s only in recent years that the concept has taken off in popular culture.
With the rise of digital artworks and social media, the term has been adopted by a new generation of creative professionals who aspire to be the next big thing.
“It’s really about changing the perception of what it means to be an artist,” says Amanda McInnes, the executive producer of The Art of Design podcast.
“And so what I think that people need to do is understand that the work is what they do, it’s their life, and they’re not a statistic.
And it’s not just an act, it is what makes them happy.”
The term was originally coined by American artist James Kowalski to describe his paintings and drawings.
But in the past year, it has gained popularity with the likes of Mark Zuckerberg and the rapper Lil Wayne, and has gained an international following in the form of a viral YouTube video, The Art Of Design.
In the video, which was watched more than 100 million times, McInns and her co-host, Mark Haddon, delve into the origins of the term and how it has been applied to them.
“The word ‘artist’ was originally used as a pejorative term for a lot of artists who were just trying to get a job and to be in their own way a part of the system, but now it’s really been about being part of a community,” she says.
“You can find an artist in your local neighbourhood, you can find a person who’s been working with you for years and they’ve done something, and then you can go into their studio and see them doing their thing, and there’s a huge connection to that artist.”
McInnes says the word “artist”, like so many words, has come to symbolise a sense of identity, which is something many people in Australia have been grappling with in recent decades.
“I think the word ‘art’ has been a big one for me, as it has for a number of other people, because I’ve been very much in the visual arts and I’ve loved the visual aspect of it,” she explains.
“There’s a certain sense of community in visual art, and I think a lot people who have a connection to it feel a sense that they’re part of something bigger than themselves.”
And that’s what McInne says is the point of The Arts of Design.
“What the show is about is connecting with other artists to bring them together and see how we can make a difference in the world,” she concludes.
“That’s what it’s about, that’s why we’ve made it.
So the work that you do as an artist, as a writer, as an activist, you are creating something that affects people and that changes the world.”
