A study by the BBC Sport research desk has revealed the world champions of the five major sports – soccer, football, cricket, ice hockey and golf – are making more money than anyone else.
The average football player makes $23,000 a year, while the average golfer makes $18,000.
The study found that the world champion of each sport, Cristiano Ronaldo, earned an average of $18.8m a year in 2015.
It found that tennis players earned $17.5m in 2015, followed by the world number one Roger Federer at $17m.
However, the study revealed that the average golfer earned $16.3m in that same year.
The findings are based on a global survey of 1,200 players, and are based mainly on salaries and salaries in the UK and US.
They were also influenced by the average wages paid to the world class players.
In a statement, the BBC said:The survey, conducted by the independent Money and Sport Research Group, surveyed more than 1,000 professional footballers, golfers, tennis players and ice hockey players and found that they earn between $20,000 and $22,000 annually.
The research shows that the richest sportsmen are also the richest athletes.
The richest tennis player in the world, Andy Murray, earned $1.4bn in 2015 according to Forbes.
However in the same year, the average earnings of the top golfers are $4.4m.
The BBC Sport analysis also revealed that golfers earned more money in 2015 than the average football or basketball player.
In comparison, golf and tennis players make less in 2015 per match.
The survey also revealed the average salary of professional tennis players is around $50,000, while it is around the $100,000 range for professional football players.
The top golf players earned a median of $30m in the last financial year.
Average football and ice-hockey players earned between $13m and $14m.
Cristiano Ronaldo earned $18m last year.
Roger Federer earned $20m last summer.
